PEKIN NATIVE AND NASHVILLE PREFORMER JOSHUA KETCHMARK PAYS HOMAGE TO HIS LATE FATHER WITH A SONG
For Joshua Ketchmark, the road to Nashville started in the small closet of a house on Fourth Street.

It was there he found an old acoustic guitar, a copy of “With the Beatles” and, through them, his love for music.

Now more than two decades after he left Pekin for Nashville, Ketchmark is paying homage to the town and people that shaped his life — more specifically, his dad.

His new song, titled “My Old Man,” tells the story of his relationship with his father, Bill.

Bill, a regular at Friends Tap and Sunset Hills Golf Club in Pekin, died of cancer in 2003.

“My dad was always kinda there in the beginning for me as far as playing music,” he said. “So it took me some time to get over it. I’m still dealing with it here and there.”

Thirteen years after his father’s passing, Ketchmark said it was a friend’s advice that prompted him to write the song he said was always on his mind.
“He told me, ‘You’ll never see anything the same again,’ and he’s kinda right.”

That wisdom, coupled with the recent birth of his daughter, Leah, was all the inspiration he needed.

“I just started writing kinda how I did when I was growing up in Pekin,” he said. “Just writing for the sake of writing.”

What followed is a stripped-down acoustic track through which Ketchmark details the dealings of a man who was “always the life of the party.” The vocals reverberate over a finger-picked guitar, telling with a sort of haunted echo the story of his father.

Ketchmark, who graduated from Pekin Community High School in 1992, relays both the physical and emotional distance he felt with his father as he traversed the road between Nashville, then Los Angeles, then back again to Nashville.

“When I got (to Nashville), I kinda wasn’t sure what my place was going to be,” he said. “It’s one of those songs that kinda came out all at once.”

He calls it the most personal song he’s ever written.

Leah’s mother, Jessica, agrees.

“I tear up each time I play it,” she said. “I unfortunately never had the opportunity to meet Bill. Joshua always tells me that he would have loved me, and from all the stories I have heard about this man, I know I would have loved him, too.”

In May, Ketchmark will open the International Pop Overthrow in Nashville. He has yet to play live “My Old Man,” which still hits him emotionally each time he hears it. However, with his young daughter in mind, he said he’ll continue to tell the story of Bill.

He hopes it’ll one day help his daughter understand something about the grandfather she never met.

“He would have loved her to death.”

The opening track, “About to Break” is a gutsy fist-pumper, Joshua’s wail of a voice yells out over each chorus on a justifiably pissed off vocal track. It’s a mix with a welcome focus on the drums, though it manages to remain melodic despite the exhilarating track that hammers on from the opening chord to the explosive finish, brandishing a real heavy-metal esque moment. Next up is “Fallen,” its pleasingly quirky instrumentation and a bouncy, visceral pop rock arrangement make it a standout track. Joshua’s vocals add a glistening charisma despite the content of the lyrics, an upbeat break-up song that somehow manages to add a sense of fun to the keenly emotional content. If “Fallen” is something of a break-up anthem, “Hurt” is where the sadness turns to bitterness, full of biting lyrics that express caution and remorse, its energetic chorus gives way to a raucous, emphatic beat that stands out beautifully and quickly becomes a staple throughout the album. The melody is lifted by the intoxicating sound of Joshua’s voice, who only manages to add the gritty emotion in an almost effortless fashion.

JOSHUA KETCHMARK – THE IGNITED EP

‘The Ignited’ is Joshua Ketchmark’s third release of 2012, concluding a trilogy of EPs showcasing the Tennessee-based singer-songwriter’s many facets. Following the power pop-ish ‘The Bittersweet’ and the wonderful, alt-country infused ‘The Dreamers Disease’, ‘The Ignited’ offers four energetic alt-rock tunes and presents the louder elements of his sound.

The opening track ‘About To Break’ is also the edgiest, as it powers ahead with some serious staccato riffing. The most alt-rock tune in Ketchmark’s EP trilogy, it firmly sets out his intentions, while his technical team of Davey Julson Riley and Jeremy Hatcher (best known for their work with Elvis Costello and Black Veil Brides, respectively) bring the song to life with a very crisp studio sound. Ketchmark attacks his lyric with a suitably sneering (slightly drawled) performance, while the rest of his band goes all out. There’s a rumbling bass which isn’t too high in the end mix (it really should have been pushed upfront); to make up for this, the drums attack in a fashion rarely heard on Ketchmark’s previous outings. In all, it’s a bit trashy, but a fine way to kick things off.

A fine balance between rock edge and pop sensibilities makes ‘Fallen’ shine. Ketchmark is in strong voice throughout, but it is only really with the chorus this one really grabs. A simple hook line and some soft backing harmonies are on hand for a full radio-friendly sound. Treading on Butch Walker’s coat-tails with its blend of pop/rock and alternative edge, you should be able to have a guess at how this sounds. While you’ve heard it all before – and many times, no doubt – if tuneful, slightly alternative rock is your bag, this should greet your ears somewhat favourably. Despite its predictable nature, ‘Fallen’ is ‘The Ignited’s recommended listen.

‘Hurt’ works on a little too much of a tried and tested formula, but if you can accept that there’s nothing new here, like ‘Fallen’, it’s got a pretty decent heart, even if it doesn’t always quite reach the stratospheres it’s aiming for. Hook-wise its strong, but musically it is a mixed bag: the pounding drums and rhythm guitars are enjoyable enough, but the guitar solo isn’t much more than a rudimentary offering. If Ketchmark had pulled out the stops on the lead guitar front, it could have, perhaps, been a match for ‘Fallen’, but as it is, it’s okay.

Finishing with a big emo-ish power ballad, ‘Without You’ is a mid-paced affair, where Ketchmark’s slightly filtered, slightly overwrought vocals lead the way. Musically, a few chiming guitars are its high point, but those – combined with reasonable song writing – just aren’t enough to make this any feel any more than bog standard. If Ketchmark were aiming for that alt-rock hit, there’s something missing here; maybe it’s a more instant chorus, maybe it’s a slightly bigger punch that’s needed…but it’s a case of “is that all?”

While it is obvious to see why Ketchmark has chosen to end his trilogy here – very much on a rock-fuelled, mostly upbeat note – it’s not necessary the sound of a musician going out with all guns blazing, especially in comparison to his previous EPs. There are some very enjoyable moments throughout, but these four numbers are not always loaded with of the kind of fireworks they could have been. These songs would’ve, perhaps, had a much greater appeal if he had chosen them to open the trilogy instead…but after ‘The Dreamers Disease’, ‘The Ignited’ sounds like a musician playing for safety. That’s fine of course, but as a parting statement from a body of work slowly unfolding over the course of a year, this EP should have been more than that.

Joshua Ketchmark´s 3rd EP in 2012 is called “The Ignited” and will be out on Oct 30th, it´s produced by Davey Julson-Rieley who has worked with Kill Hannah, Kelly Clarkson and Elvis Costello. These 4 new songs are really good and a cool blend of powerpop and modern rock, Joshua Ketchmark even takes a visit in AOR land on “Hurt”. The opener “About to break” is more of a contemporary modern rock song and also perfect for active rock radio, my favorite though is the smart rock of “Without you”. Such lovely harmonies in this song where my thoughts go to Ken Andrews. Highly recommendable!

THE RIPPLE EFFECT ALBUM REVIEW

TO THE CLOUD AND BEYOND – FEATURING NARROW PLAINS, ZODIAC DEATH VALLEY, SAVE ENDS, AND JOSHUA KETCHMARK

Here is the rock hard truth and it isn’t all that bad.

There was a time when musicians sold millions upon millions of oil-based vinyl, aluminum covered plastic and magnetic tape copies of their music. Back then bands hoped to break even when they toured. The purpose of playing in public was to promote store sales of their latest recordings. Record companies underwrote extravagant live shows and positioned bands in multi-band line-ups, on National and International tours with the bands as guarantors of the costs associated with the once every year or so promotion of this year’s album. With ticket sales the bands and record companies hoped to cover their out of pocket costs. The margin on recording sales was such that a few hundred thousand sales could provide a band with subsistence income if it toured on the cheap. Millions in sales meant the rock and roll lifestyle that, if prudently invested, could last a lifetime.

It doesn’t work that way anymore. Digitization and file-sharing changed the formula. It became easy to copy and exchange music and album art. Musicians seized upon the opportunity to work unencumbered by obligations to record companies and tried to reach a wider audience. Free music proliferated beyond TV, radio, satellite and cable music offerings to include a vast variety of internet radio stations, music sharing, and free and paid music download sites. With so many new ways to obtain music, music sales declined, and so did band and record company profits. The technological changes created a new market paradigm. Musicians could no longer afford to break even on a tour. They needed to make a significant profit. The number of consumers who bought music had shrunk. Yet, the number who listened to music hadn’t changed.

There were two other transformations due to digitization. The cost of distribution virtually disappeared. Once a band made a digital copy it could be downloaded infinite times without the cost of pressing, plastic, paper and packaging. Thus, it no longer takes hundreds of thousands of pressings to make a profit. It only takes a few thousand downloads. In addition, the cost to market one’s music was significantly reduced. One digital press release now extends to the far reaches of the earth with a click of a button. Atlantic, Capitol, CBS, Sony and other mega-entertainment labels started swallowing each other up in buy outs and mergers to remain profitable as the ability to do what they used to do became easy and the cost to do it became cheap. Thus, small record companies and artist-owned labels have proliferated.

So why am I recounting this piece of music industry economic history? Well, more and more of what I review is provided directly by artists and small independent labels and recently I have noticed a few trends, anecdotal evidence to be sure – nothing empirical – merely something based on the requests I receive to review music. These are:

1. More musicians now only offer digital recordings and downloads. I would say about 75% of what I now receive is in a digital download form;
2. Many more musicians are narrow-casting – by that I mean they offer a niche sound, genre or unique presentation, rather than make any attempt to find a large crossover audience; and
3. Most successful musicians constantly tour, perform and are prolific in their production of original material. (Even Green Day will have three album releases in the next six months!)
This is all great stuff for music consumers. Music is now cheaper, easily accessible and more tailored to the listener’s tastes than ever before. The musicians that created it are more likely to be seen locally or on extended tours in small venues at reasonable prices. It also means I get some great stuff to review that I likely would not otherwise hear. For example:

Narrow Plains – Somewhere In Between EP
It may only be five tracks but, damn, what a sweet five tracks. This three piece London-based band turns out some of the catchiest acoustic alternative/folk music around. Charlie Ferriday plays a beautiful folksy six string to accompany his smooth lead vocals. Stuart Connick is a beat master, providing wonderful drumbeats, percussion and harmony. Roger Connick mans the bass and offers backing vocals. They gig about the U.K., but with efforts such as Somewhere In Between I suspect they are likely to find a much wider audience.

Zodiac Death Valley – S/T
This ensemble has been called “SF’s loudest folk band.” Their self-titled ten track album is an amalgam of sophisticated garage folk punk rock. The band will play with your senses and rock you into psychedelic ecstasy. Nic Abodeely provides the vocals and plays guitar alongside guitarist Jordan Villa. Nate Ricker rocks the keyboards and strums a mandolin. Dan Burns is the bassist and Landon Cisneros beats the skins. They play all over the City, provide a high energy show and, in true San Francisco style, embrace the, ummm, unlimited variety of the Bay Area arts and body parts scene.

Save Ends – Strength Vs. Will EP
Save Ends puts “Punk” in “Power Pop.” This Boston-based band is comprised of former members of the bands No Trigger and Rotary and just plain boogies. On this five track EP they have a guest female vocalist, Christine Atturrio, with a voice reminiscent of a young Avril Lavigne, who perfectly compliments lead singer Brendan Cahill for some great up-tempo duets. The EP is infused with great harmonies, power chords and fun, mosh pit melodies. This is a pop rocker’s paradise of punkish play. It is audience surfing worthy

Classic rock is not dead. It burns bright in Joshua Ketchmark and you will catch fire listening to his upcoming four track EP The Ignited. Ketchmark leads guitarist Christian Martucci, bassist Carl Raether and drummer Zak St. John through original anthem worthy rockers. Although based in Los Angeles you are just as likely to catch Ketchmark in Nashville or Knoxville, TN or on the road in the U.S. after this EP is released on October 30, 2012. You might want to save a few semolians for tickets and get your torches ready.

So, there you have it. The new musical paradigm. Where do we go from here? Well, the next new wave is already on its way. Some call it “predictive music” – music tailored to the consumer’s specific mood, desire, liking, and created by the consumer’s thought, choice and unconscious desire. Not just a playlist, the consumer will generate the sound that, at that specific moment, gives her or him the utmost pleasure. Then, through our need for shared experience each person will share their personal creations to let others participate in, and experience, their muse. If it rings true to many it will ebb and flow around the world in the form of unique electric impulses. It is Ripple Music.

REVIEW: JOSHUA KETCHMARK “THE IGNITED” [EP]

Rounding out a trio of EPs released this year, modern rocker Joshua Ketchmark delivers “The Ignited,” October 30th. Not to slight the other two excellent EPs (reviewed here), but it seems Ketchmark has saved the best for last. These four tunes all have bite and grab at your attention span greedily, exuding a commercial appeal that ranks them as some of the more radio-friendly songs he’s written to date. With help from Davey Julson Rieley (Kill Hannah, Kelly Clarkson, Elvis Costello) as producer and engineer, along with engineer Jeremy Hatcher (The Used, Black Veil Brides), “The Ignited” is a sonic treat.

The perspective of this record comes from a man that’s been hurt and heartbroken. “The Ignited” begins with the rousing track, “About To Break” – an instant anthem sure to get your blood pumping. The break-up song “Fallen” easily glides into Foo Fighters-territory and is likely to become my favorite in the bunch. The markedly darker tone of the gritty “Hurt” provides a good example of the contrasts Ketchmark is skilled with juggling. Be sure to wait for the chilling note he holds 2/3’s of the way through. He concludes with “Without You”, the first single. One of the more ambitious songs in the Ketchmark catalogue, “Without You” attempts to merge moody verses with a more accessible chorus. A decent track, but not the best one here in my opinion.

JOSHUA KETCHMARK – DREAMER’S DISEASE EP

Here’s something to look forward this July!

Joshua Ketchmark, born in Illinois, found his way to the Music City to hone his music. With a guitar (and some more) on his hand, Ketchmark has been able to write songs that give a glimpse of serenity to the downhearted ones. His ability to write songs with raw, authentic sentiments draws audience to a realm of vulnerability and nostalgia. Whether you’re looking back or pushing forward, Ketchmark’s eclectic musical style would be a great companion to get there.

ALT SOUNDS ALBUM REVIEW

JOSHUA KETCHMARK ABOUT TO RELEASE DREAMERS DISEASE [EP]

Following up the success of his last EP Bittersweet Joshua Ketchmark is set to return with his new one Dreamers Disease on July 17th. This is the second in a trilogy of releases that Joshua will be giving us this year. The four track EP kicks off with ‘Saving Grace’ a perfect summer anthem with crashing guitars complimenting Joshua’s lilting voice. The second track ‘Mason Jar’ is by far the standout on the short set this one is full of attitude and you really get a sense of Joshua’s anguish as he sings ‘I foresee she’ll be the death of me ‘on the captivating chorus.

‘Should have been’ is more melancholy after the excitement of the previous track here Ketchmark’s voice is dripping with emotion as he laments the breakdown of a relationship. The lyrics are impressive too displaying an innate ability to masterfully tell a story that will captivate and inspire listeners. JOSHUA KETCHMARK – THE DREAMER’S DISEASE EP

In March 2012, singer songwriter Joshua Ketchmark released ‘The Bittersweet’, the first of a proposed trilogy of EPs. Produced by Denny Smith, the release showed off Ketchmark’s abilities to lay down enjoyable hook-laden tunes in a radio-friendly pop-rock style. His second EP, ‘The Dreamers Disease’, again focuses on hook-laden tunes, but is by no means just a retread of the previous release. Smith’s place in the producer’s chair this time around has been taken by Kenny Wright (also of The Great Affairs) and Ketchmark’s decision to bring in a handful of alt-country session guys means these four songs are sometimes presented with more of a rootsy/country rock groove.

‘Step Back’ combines a country rock ethic with the presence of a power-ballad. The verses are structured around acoustic guitar lines, over which Ketchmark appears in rather fine vocal form. For the chorus, things shift up several gears as heartfelt song writing comes blended with a stadium rock intensity. All the while, the country-rock elements never seem too far away, with a steel guitar (played by Tony Paoletta) lurking in the background. ‘It Should Have Been More’ – a roots-rock arrangement again augmented by steel guitars – is the EP’s strongest offering, and while the arrangement at first sounds relatively simple, closer listens reveal some great touches mandolin, (courtesy of Bonepony man Nicolas Nguyen). While the lyrical themes of regret are well worn, Ketchmark really excels vocally – an absolutely first rate performance. Musically, it could be described as Bon Jovi (circa ‘Endless Highway’) as played by Ryan Adams & The Cardinals in a tough mood. Although such a flippant description does not really do this track justice, keeping that in mind, you should at least get a hint of what to expect.

The EP’s “odd man out”, ‘Mission Jar’ is far more aggressive. Although it doesn’t quite fit the alternative rock moods of Ketchmark’s previous EP, it doesn’t really have a comfortable place here either. The rhythm guitars lay down a scratchy tune, angular but not quite settling into the funk groove it half-promises, while the lead guitars are surprisingly upfront. It is an interesting number on which Ketchmark sounds vocally cool, but it is a tune which, maybe, ought to have been left on the shelf until a more fitting home became available… The single release ‘Saving Grace’ is a slice of upbeat pop/rock on which the blend of acoustic and electric guitars meshing well, while some old-school organ (played by Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Peter Keys) recalls The Wallflowers. A slight mood change for a big chorus leans more toward a New Jersey sound and, after a couple of spins, it is so obvious why this was chosen as the lead track. Its goodtime, optimistic qualities and another strong melody makes it ideal for radio.

Those who enjoyed ‘The Bittersweet’ EP and Joshua Ketchmark’s previous releases may find ‘The Dreamers Disease’ a little less instant, but once again, his gift for song writing often wins out. The EP’s two strongest tracks (the wonderful ‘Should Have Been More’ and ‘Step Back’) are enough to recommend this release…and if you dig those, that could just enough to make you wish this had been a full-length disc exploring similar styles.

“Dreamers Disease” is the second release within a series of three EPs being completed by modern rocker Joshua Ketchmark. “Dreamers Disease”, dropping July 17, exudes more of an alternative country-rock feel, underscored by the Nashville flavored track, “Should Have Been”. The EP was recorded at 1 Tree Studio in Nashville and features appearances from Nashville players such as Tony Paoletta (Pedal Steal; Dixie Chicks, Travis Tritt) and Dave Webb (Bass; Randall Bramblett, Sugarland). Inspired by short-lived romances and fervid moments when your childhood crashes head first into adulthood, “the Dreamers Disease” aims to capture the attention of youthful dreamers and hopeful wanderers alike.

As mentioned, “Should Have Been” is the song with the most overt country influence and this mid-tempo treat has a very satisfying hook. “Step Back” closes this EP with a breezy ballad that begins with some gentle strumming before expanding into an emotive epic.

A SONGWRITER’S STORY WITH JOSHUA KETCHMARK

Take what you love and make it your life. That phrase comes to mind when I think of writing the song “Saving Grace,” from the Dreamers Disease EP.

The opening riff was born in the afternoon haze from a Vegas night. I can still see light coming through the blinds of the hotel window. Lying awake with the first line echoing through my head. It’s one of those moments when the voice you hear just won’t let you rest. And that’s what started what would become “Saving Grace.”

I grew up in a small town in the middle of Illinois. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, but I think I knew early on it wasn’t where I’d settle down. As soon as I had my chance I took it, and with that came the experiences and the characters I would fill my songs with to this day.

“Smokestacks on the skyline,” the opening lyric, is the most defining memory I have of leaving all I knew for the unknown. It was a rush of excitement in a breath of uncertainty. It was the defining moment when you realize what’s possible in life. That instance you throw caution to the wind and follow your heart. As taillights set ablaze to the morning light your on your way. Looking more at what’s to come then what’s left behind. Catching the occasional glance in the rearview, your eyes give all the reassurance you need.

If you could sum up the instant, evening or event that changed everything, what would it be? And if not, what are you waiting for? It’s not too late for saving grace. Let’s leave it all behind, there’s no time for long goodbyes.

JOSHUA KETCHMARK, THE BITTERSWEET

It is amazing what music can do in the respect of changing your mood, how you think or maybe even certain aspects of your life. Joshua Ketchmark has out done himself on his latest release, “The Bittersweet” and has the ability to do all the above.

The CD is pop music with an edge. The edge being that it has heart and you can feel it from the very depths of your soul. This music speaks the language of universal appeal and evokes passion on so many levels. It gets your attention right away and now that you are engaged his vocals kick in and leaves you spinning. He has a smooth sophistication that is belted with such conviction it can make a believer out of anyone.

This is the first release of 3 EP’s. His goal is to release 12 songs for 2012. I would say this is a very fine start. I do not mean to get ahead of myself but I can’t wait to hear what else is in store. He is a powerhouse house with the full package.

If you are looking to be entertained, then look no further. Joshua Ketchmark is a serious contender and is taking this music scene and making it his own. “The Bittersweet” is hooky and confidently executed. You only have to listen to it once and the songs will live in your head long after the player has stopped.

JOSHUA KETCHMARK-THE BITTERSWEET EP

Singer-songwriter Joshua Ketchmark won a cult audience with his 2008 release “List of Regrets.” Following that release, there was a relatively long gap before he returned with his second full-length, “Karus Cruentus.” For his third release, Ketchmark opted to try something a little different: rather than leave things too long and wait until the next full record was ready to go, he decided that his next works should be split into a series of EP releases. In a world where physical CD sales are on the downturn and people are picking and choosing selected tracks for their portable music devices, releasing a few tracks at a time certainly seems like a good idea.

The first of these EPs, “The Bittersweet”-released in the first quarter of 2012- features four top class tunes. The opening number “Covered in Roses” is a superb piece of adult pop/rock which showcases a fair amount of Ketchmark’s talent. The guitars ring clearly throughout, and the mid-paced riffs offer something of an atmosphere that could best be described as vaguely U2-ish. Ketchmark’s relatively soft vocal is full of emotion while never overstretching itself and this already makes good listening. By the time the chorus chimes in, things improve farther; it’s immediately obvious that Mr. Ketchmark not only knows how to write and arrange a great tune, he also understands what makes a great radio hook. Combined with those reverbed guitars on show throughout, the hook has a really classic sound, using its late80s/early 90s influences to create something quite rousing. “All These Eyes” has a similar huge rock/pop feel at its core, though with one big difference; the U2-styled guitar parts are gone; in their place, some solid acoustic work backed by a fairly weighty sounding drum part. The chorus beefs things up to some rather safe-sounding, radio-friendly soft rock, which although could never be described as edgy is well played and superbly produced. Overall another good example of the kind of rock/pop Ketchmark does so well. {If you like either of these tracks, be sure to check out Dom Liberati’s album too}.

The other two songs change the mood a great deal. “The Take” presents something more in an alternative rock vein, but retains a shiny commercial edge. With a choppy riff, Ketchmark adopts a sound which borrows elements from Jimmy Eat World and American HiFi, melding the punchy elements with another great pop chorus. Across four minutes, his band sounds sharp as he delivers a vocal with a slight sneer which suits the piece well. Like most of the 2011 release by New Jersey outfit Readymade Breakup, this is hugely radio friendly and ought to appeal to a great many fans of the poppiest end of alt-rock music. “Cigarettes & Wine” leaves things on a gentle, somewhat downbeat note. Over a piano base, Ketchmark’s emotive vocal sounds great once again. However, as good as his vocal may be, it’s not as great as the sound of his backing band: the bass is hugely warm, the steady drum beat has a huge presence and the harmony vocals add depth without being overdone or sounding showy, while a selection of keyboards flesh things out farther with string sounds. Better still, the occasional moments of acoustic lead guitar have a great presence. The end result here is not only testament to Ketchmark’s skill as a writer/musician, but also Denny Smith’s production which is absolutely spot on.

With such a feel-good punchiness, “The Take” would be enough to warrant checking this out, but since it’s joined by three almost equally good numbers, “The Bittersweet” presents a great exercise in quality over quantity. With no obvious weak elements, this is a highly recommended listen.

Joshua Ketchmark is a promising young modern rock and pop artist making his return with a new trifecta of three EPs. The first, due April 17, is called “The Bittersweet” and features four new songs that showcase Ketchmark’s eclectic musical influences. The EP was produced by long-time friend Denny Smith (fORMER/The Great Affairs) and Michael Saint-Leon (George Thorogood, Buddy Guy). The team is a sonic success whether producing emotive balladry or a crushing rocker.

“Covered in Roses” gets things off on a positive note, sounding like a song that would have fit comfortably on his winning debut record, “List of Regrets” (reviewed here). “All These Eyes” is the first single, which has some good lyrics and sounds radio-friendly enough, but gets a little cumbersome with its slow pace. “The Take” triumphantly storms back onto more solid, rocky ground, and is one of the most satisfyingly aggressive Ketchmark songs I’ve heard. On the closing piano-based ballad, “Cigarettes and Wine”, Ketchmark is back with his heart on his sleeve, turning in a fantastically earnest vocal, one that has a high probability of inducing chills.

Joshua Ketchmark is an emotional dude. Labeled as a “damn good soundtrack to his life,” Ketchmark’s debut album, List of Regrets, is a lineup of regrettable tunes chronicling heartbreak, watching friends self-destruct, and the like. It’s as heartfelt as can be for a man searching for truth only to be left demoralized by the harsh realities of life – and Ketchmark does a fantastic job of subjecting the listener to that feeling. The album is drenched in lush arrangments and the breathy swoon of a tortured soul. The track “Everything” released in early 2009 and sounds like a throwback to everything you heard in the early 90s, complete with Ketchmark’s guitar licks that offer to do the crying for him. I have a feeling we’ll be hearing more of him in the future.

Before long he found himself in Nashville, honing his songwriting chops and picking up more instruments along the way. By incorporating himself into the fabric of musician’s society, he soon found himself working as a guitar tech, providing opportunities to rub elbows with producer extraordinaire Rob Cavallo, Johnny Lang, and Melissa Etheridge. In fact, Etheridge let him use her signature 12-string guitar to record his debut record, which is the first thing you hear in the Byrds-like riff on the excellent “How 2 Let Go”.

All Ketchmark’s tunes follow the formula we love: quiet but engaging versus that erupt into a catchy arena-ready chorus. As you would expect from a “soundtrack to life”, Ketchmark touches on familiar themes of romance, but also explores feelings of loss (of his father in “On Your Shoulders”) and finding happiness in the wrong place (the eerie and mysterious “Now”). Overall, the production is great and the vocals are well done (would have enjoyed more pronounced harmonies, though).

“List Of Regrets” will satisfy fans of The Calling, Lifehouse, or 2000-era Goo Goo Dolls. What a great way to start off 2010! Ketchmark has delivered a remarkable debut and I look forward to hearing this artist grow into a superstar.

DAVID MARX REVIEW ALBUM REVIEW

This eleven-track album by Joshua Ketchmark, is a full on, roller-coaster ride through the back pages of downtown potential and West Coast Americana. In other words, List Of Regrets is a high-octane, smorgasbord cross betwixt mid-nineties Matthew Sweet (circa Girlfriend) Ryan Adams (circa 29) and the mighty under-rated Dramarama (circa Hi-Fi Sci-Fi).

So, lots to ponder and riddle upon.

The slow build of the blues based opening track ‘How 2 Let Go’ (replete with Prince spelling), compellingly sets the stage for what’s in store. Its kloof like musicality, wholeheartedly lending itself to the rather lyrically pensive follow-up, ‘Never Beautiful.’ A song that’s as equally introspective as it idiosyncratic, one would indeed be wise to traipse with considered caution, especially when Ketchmark sings: ‘I can see you scatter/Breathing misconception/Into all of your answers.’

Gadamer with a guitar (German philosopher, who, by way of Truth and Method, tried to clarify the phenomenon of understanding)? Or, inadvertent sage with a mighty list of pronouncements to make, by way of rock’n’roll?

Either way, what we have here and throughout the album as a whole, is a compelling assortment of niftily crafted tones; replete with well-constructed words and measured production by Ketchmark himself. Prime examples being the backwards Beatlesesque guitar on ‘On Your Shoulder’ and the distorted avalanche of guitars (care of Greg Ripes) throughout the alluringly titled ‘Maybe.’

To be sure, when the singer/songwriter moves away from the more obviously clinical rock stuff, the embryonic intensity of drama in such a song as ‘It Doesn’t Mean The Same’ is invariably allowed to breath and shine. A line such as ‘Spanning time between cigarettes and rosaries/And claiming that it’s/The only way,’’ might, in some quarters, be considered as good as it gets. But, because it’s partially and unfortunately smothered with superfluous clutter, it doesn’t quite hit the mark. This is a shame really, because as mentioned at the outset, List Of Regrets has oodles of potential.

The sort of which, warrants both recognition and respect.
