Un romanzo di formazione è un componimento letterario in cui il protagonista subisce, attraverso le vicende raccontate nelle sue pagine, una trasformazione che lo vede passare dall’infanzia all’età adulta. L’evoluzione del protagonista verso la sua maturità è ostacolata da imprevedibili eventi che lo mettono alla prova ponendolo davanti a scelte difficili e situazioni problematiche e di non facile risoluzione.
In questo genere di romanzo il lettore si può immedesimare con il protagonista riconoscendosi nei dubbi che lo tormentano e negli errori in cui incappa che diventano parte integrante di quel processo di crescita alla fine del quale, l’esperienza acquisita lo consacra come adulto.
Il coinvolgimento emotivo del lettore con questo tipo di romanzo ha un suo corrispettivo in musica, rappresentato da quelle canzoni che alla stregua di quel prodotto letterario, catturano l’attenzione raccontando storie che descrivono un percorso esistenziale.
L’ultimo singolo di Joshua Ketchmark intitolato No Stopping Us è quel tipo di canzone che attraverso una velata metafora vuole raccontare quel processo di maturazione che porta una persona a entrare nella fase adulta della sua vita non senza ostacoli e difficoltà.
l brano che stiamo esaminando è un ottimo pezzo rock caratterizzato da una forte impronta country. La canzone inizia con la chitarra che getta la base della traccia eseguendo un tema dal sapore folk con in sottofondo un organo. La prima strofa viene cantata su questa base minimale e dopo poche battute il brano entra nel vivo esplodendo con il suo trascinante ritornello.
La canzone che stiamo ascoltando attraversa diversi stati emotivi che vengono espressi da sezioni in cui si alternano episodi più riflessivi, cantati e suonati piano, e tratti aperti e solari in cui la dinamica del brano si fa più intensa. Il testo della canzone racconta di un ragazzo che entra in possesso dell’auto dei suoi sogni che è appartenuta prima a sua nonna e poi a suo padre.
Apparentemente la canzone sembra descrivere il rapporto di follia giovanile del ragazzo con la sua auto e delle scorribande tipiche dell’adolescenza. Nella nostra interpretazione l’auto rappresenta l’eredità dei valori che sono stati tramandati dalla famiglia al ragazzo.
Le tradizioni della famiglia sono la base della sua educazione e delle sue conoscenze che risultano in qualche modo limitate perché derivate della saggezza collettiva di una piccola città in cui tutti si conoscono e la vita scorre tranquilla. Come esplicitato dal testo il bambino che si avventura in un mondo molto più grande del suo luogo di origine si scontra con la brutalità dell’esistenza dalla quale era al sicuro nel suo paesino.
Il furore giovanile che vuole mettere a fuoco il mondo si spegne col tempo e quel cuore coraggioso e ribelle si trova coperto da erbacce e indurito come la pietra in età adulta. L’evoluzione del personaggio della canzone rappresenta la disillusione a cui tutti siamo portati quando smettiamo i panni dell’adolescenza per entrare in quelli costrittivi dell’età adulta.

Joshua Ketchmark’s latest single titled No Stopping Us is that type of song that through a veiled metaphor wants to tell the maturation process that leads a person to enter the adult phase of his life, not without obstacles and difficulties. The song we are examining is an excellent rock piece characterized by a strong country imprint. The song begins with the guitar that lays the foundation of the track by playing a theme with a folk flavor with an organ in the background. The first verse is sung on this minimal base and after a few bars the song comes alive, exploding with its enthralling refrain. The song we are listening to goes through different emotional states which are expressed by sections in which more reflective episodes alternate, sung and played slowly, and open and sunny sections in which the dynamics of the piece becomes more intense. The lyrics of the song tell of a boy who comes into possession of his dream car that first belonged to his grandmother and then to his father. Apparently the song seems to describe the relationship of youthful madness of the boy with his car and the raids typical of adolescence. In our interpretation the car represents the legacy of values that have been handed down from the family to the boy. The traditions of the family are the basis of his education and his knowledge which are somewhat limited because they derive from the collective wisdom of a small town where everyone knows each other and life flows smoothly. As explained by the text, the child who ventures into a world much larger than his place of origin collides with the brutality of existence from which he was safe in his village. The youthful fury that wants to set the world on fire fades with time and that brave and rebellious heart is found overgrown with weeds and hardened as stone in adulthood. The evolution of the character in the song represents the disillusionment we are all led to when we leave the role of adolescence to enter the constrictive ones of adulthood.
